Can You Just

Scheduling / Shared work

Working on the same thing isn’t always working at the same time.

A shared assignment has one contribution mode for all its contributors: independent or simultaneous. The choice determines whether their working intervals must align.

Independent contributions can happen separately.

Contributors can use different scheduled periods and requested start times. Each contribution has its own planned duration, following the stage duration unless explicitly adjusted. The stage finishes when every required contribution has finished.

Adding a second contributor does not automatically divide one estimate in half. Work that can be split into separate deliverables may be clearer as separate stages.

Simultaneous contributions need common time.

For a simultaneous stage, every contributor reserves the same stage duration in matching common-availability intervals. Calendars, breaks, leave, commitments and other allocated work reduce that intersection.

A one-hour review needs an hour when both Alice and Ben are free. Alice’s free morning cannot replace Ben’s missing morning. The common intervals may span more than one day if needed.

Keep one mode per assignment.

Every contributor to the underlying assignment uses the same mode. Mixed independent and simultaneous contributions are rejected. Use separate dependent stages for work that genuinely needs different arrangements.

Dependent work waits for completion of the shared stage, including all independent contributions. A small interruption can therefore delay another person’s next task by losing a common window.

A FICTIONAL SCHEDULING STORY

Two people. One shared hour.

Calculated with the CYJ scheduler

Before

Alice and Ben have a one-hour simultaneous review scheduled together at 09:00.

The change

Ben records unavailable time from 09:00 to 11:00. Alice is still free that morning.

Before

Project completion: Mon 10:00

Alice
  • Joint reviewMon 09:00–Mon 10:00
Ben
  • Joint reviewMon 09:00–Mon 10:00

After

Project completion: Mon 12:00

Alice
  • Joint reviewMon 11:00–Mon 12:00
Ben
  • Joint reviewMon 11:00–Mon 12:00

Example assumptions. Monday 19 October 2026. Both calendars are otherwise 09:00–18:00 without breaks. Ben’s personal non-working interval is the only change.

THE CONSEQUENCE

The joint review needs common capacity. It cannot use Alice’s free time while Ben is away.

THE REVISED PLAN

Both contributions move to 11:00–12:00. The assignment keeps one simultaneous mode and one hour per contributor.
